Tablets are devices which a quickly becoming  essential device to have, just like your laptop or smartphone. If we were to ask somebody if they were interested in a tablet pre-iPad, the answer would have been a solid no. But with the entry of the Apple into the tablet segment, the appeal of the tablet has completely changed, and has forced manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, Asus to also fall suite.

Initially, during the days of Android Tablet infancy, the Android tablets were nothing but blown up phones, but this is slowly changing, and tablets of the Android platform have risen to rival their Apple counterpart.

There is a slew of tablets available in the market now, and it has become tough for the consumer to make a choice as to which tablet to buy. Hence, we are breaking the topic down for you, giving you insight on which tablet to buy this season.

As you all must know, tablets now typically come in two flavors. One, is the standard 10 inch models, akin to the iPad. The other group is the group of 7 inch tablets, which are quickly gaining ground today. Both of these groups are targeted towards a different client base. The first group is the one which demands screen real-estate and power, while the latter group is one which wants portability.

Note that we their are some tablets which may not fall into either of the categories. This includes the iPad Mini and the Kindle Fire HD 8.9. We will be grouping them into categories according to which clientele they are marketed towards.

Asus has created a tablet which can be transformed into a makeshift laptop, and has done this well. The Transformer Tab is not only having the best hardware on any Android tablet, but also has some butter smooth UI. It is no wonder that the Transformer Tab has gotten such a cult following. It is a tablet you just cannot go wrong with.

4. Kindle Fire HD 8.9

This is a tablet which does its own. The Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ comes with a heavily skinned version of Android, along with a never-before-seen size. At 8.9 inches, the Kinde Fire HD 8.9 is the optimum balance between portability and performance. Bundles with a beautiful ultra-high-res display, and Amazon huge store, the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 is a media buffs dream. And all for a low price of $299

5. Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1

Samsung has seen great success in the form of the Galaxy Note I and II. It looks like it is trying to mimic the success in the tablet segment with the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1

This tablet features not only a beautiful AMOLED display, but also works with the S-Pen, which is optimum for taking notes and scribbling away on your tablet. Definitely something to look at for those who have to scribble things down a lot, or make fast rough sketches.

Top 5- 7 Inch Tablets of 2012

1. Nexus 7

The Google Nexus 7 is the tablet which showed that a 7 inch tablet was a viable purchase. And sales of the Nexus 7 reflect this. The butter smooth interface of the Nexus 7 is something which everybody would appreciate, and all at a low price of $199. The Nexus 7 showed that a budget tablet does not have to weak, and that a powerful experience can be provided without breaking the bank.

2. Kindle Fire HD

The Kindle Fire HD 7″ is a perfect purchase for those who would like to use the tablet for going through books and magazines. With Amazons wide range of books and magazines, the Kindle Fire HD is something which every avid reader must have. The price of the Kindle Fire HD also rivals that of the Nexus 7, and the choice between them will primarily be on the base of market preference (Amazon Market or Play Store)

3. iPad Mini

The Apple Ipad Mini is just mini in the name. Functionally, it can do anything which its older brother can do. It is also almost an inch larger then the competition, making it the optimum size. It also comes with back facing camera, which is a feature which is omitted from both the above tablet. But for these extra features and the Apple brand name, you will have to pay a price. The iPad Mini is priced at $329 for the 16 GB version, which is more expensive then the Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7, but for the price you get Apple quality along with best-in-class build quality.

4. Samsung Galaxy Tab 2

The Samsung Galaxy Tab was the first 7 inch tablet, and gave the world the taste of the 7 inch tablets. It had its faults and these were corrected in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 . The Galaxy Tab 2 provides a back facing camera, and expandable memory, all at a price lower than the competition.
